A lot of people wonder which is better, to stay in Pamukkale or Denizli to visit the travertines and historic city at Hierapolis. The answer to this question really depends on what you are hoping to get from your stay.
Firstly, you will have to go through Denizli on the way to and from Pamukkale anyway. From Denizli you will take a minibus to the area called Karahayit which is the small hotel village next to the entrance to the historic park. You can stay there if you are really only interested in seeing the tourist attraction.
If you want to get a better feel for Turkish culture, and local feel of the area, it is necessary to stay in Denizli. There, you can eat at local restaurants, shop for locally produced items, and wander the residential streets of a Turkish city. This impression is impossible to find in Pamukkale, as there is nothing there but hotels and cafes targeted 100% to tourism.
